Craigavon, Armagh
Craigavon is a new town, situated between Portadown and Lurgan in County Armagh. It is within the townlands of Drumnagoon, Balteagh, Clanrolla, Drumgask, Drumgor, Knockmenagh, Legaghory, Monbrief, Moyraverty, Tamnafiglassan, Tannaghmore West and Tullygally, in the civil parishes of Seagoe and Shankill. The town was named after the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland: James Craig, 1st Viscount Craigavon. The town was built on farmland from the mid 1960s, the original intention being to create a new 'city' between and including Portadown and Lurgan. This plan was scaled down, the two existing towns have retained their separate identities, and 'Craigavon' usually refers to the newly built areas in between. The town is built beside a pair of artificial lakes and is made up of a large residential area (Brownlow), a second smaller one (Mandeville), plus a central area (Highfield) that includes a substantial shopping centre, a courthouse and the Craigavon Civic and Conference Centre. The town is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
