Cowley, Middlesex
Cowley is a suburban village in the west of Middlesex, east of the River Colne (the Buckinghamshire border). The earliest record of the settlement is from 959. The opening of the Grand Junction Canal (1794) enabled the development of the brick industry. Though the opening of the Great Western Railway (1856) saw Cowley become a centre of market gardening, it remained a rural village into the 20th century. Considerable development from the 1930s saw the village become suburbanised. Cowley is now contiguous with Uxbridge to its north. St Laurence Church dates from the 12th century. There are several historic buildings in the High Street including The Crown, a 16th-century pub. The village is within the council area of Hillingdon.
