Coventry Cathedral, Warwickshire

Coventry Cathedral (formally the Cathedral Church of St Michael) is a Church of England 20th-century cathedral in Coventry, Warwickshire. It is the seat of the Bishop of Coventry. Designed by Sir Basil Spence as a replacement for the mediæval cathedral ruined by bombing in the Second World War, it was consecrated in 1962. The cathedral has a modernist design. The interior is notable for its modern artworks, including a huge tapestry of Christ, designed by Graham Sutherland. Jacob Epstein's bronze sculpture St Michael's Victory over the Devil is displayed on the outside of the east wall. The abstract stained-glass Baptistry window was designed by John Piper. The cathedral was built adjacent to the ruins of the mediæval cathedral to form a symbol of war-time destruction but also of peace and reconciliation. It is within the council area of Coventry.
