Corfe Castle, Dorset

Corfe Castle is the ruins of an 11th-century castle standing above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. The castle commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage. The first phase was one of the earliest castles in England to be built at least partly using stone. The castle underwent major structural changes in the 12th and 13th centuries. It was a Royalist stronghold during the Civil War, eventually falling to the Parliamentarians in 1645, after which it was slighted. The castle ruins are in the care of the National Trust. It is within the council area of Dorset.
