Copplestone Cross, Devon
The Copplestone Cross is a 10th-century granite boundary cross in Copplestone, Devon. It marks the meeting place of three ancient parishes, Crediton Hamlets, Down St Mary and Colebrooke. It was moved approximately 30ft north of its original site in 1969. The village is named, from "Copelan", after the stone. It was first mentioned in a charter of 974 and may have been erected as memorial to Bishop Putta who was murdered in 906 travelling between Bishop's Taunton and Crediton. The panels on the cross contain high-quality Anglo-Saxon decoration. It is within the council area of Mid Devon (Devon).
