Cookstown, Tyrone
Cookstown is a town in County Tyrone. It is primarily within the townlands of Loy, Cookstown, Coolnafranky and Gortalowry, in the civil parish of Derryloran. The town was founded around 1620 when the townlands were leased by Dr Alan Cooke, an English ecclesiastical lawyer, from the Archbishop of Armagh. After being destroyed in the 1641 Rebellion , the town was substnaitally rebuilt by William Stewart of Killymoon. Cookstown developed in the 19th century as the local centre of the linen trade. The town is within the council area of Mid Ulster.
