Compton, Devon

Compton (or Compton Gifford) is a former village and ancient parish that is now a suburb of Plymouth, Devon. The village is mentioned in Domesday. The 'Gifford' dates from around 1100 when the estate passed by marriage to Osbert Giffard. The area saw substantial suburban development in the 1930s and was brought into the Plymouth municipal area in 1939. It is within the council area of Plymouth.
