Coggeshall Abbey, Essex
Coggeshall Abbey is a former abbey and later country house near Coggeshall, Essex. The abbey was founded in 1140 as the last of the seventeen Savigniac houses in England. Although work commenced under the authority of the Savignacs, this order collapsed in 1147. By the time of the abbey church's completion in 1167 the abbey was part of the Cistercian Order. The abbey prospered throughout the 13th century, developing the local wool trade and acquiring various lands and rights through both royal and local grants. It was dissolved in 1538. The abbey church was demolished. A house (now known as Coggeshall Abbey) was built in 1581 on part of the monastery site by Anne Paycocke and her husband Richard Benton. The surviving monastic buildings were converted for agricultural use: the gate chapel and guest house survived as barns. It is within the council area of Braintree (Essex).
