Cliveden Estate, Buckinghamshire
The Cliveden Estate is an English country house and estate, located besides the River Thames in Buckinghamshire. The Italianate mansion, Cliveden House, stands on a high cliff above the River Thames, and the gardens provide wonderful views down the river. The present house, built in 1851 by the architect Charles Barry for the 2nd Duke of Sutherland, is the third on the site. As the home of Nancy Astor, Cliveden was the meeting place of the Cliveden Set of the 1920s and 1930s. During the early 1960s it became the setting for key events of the Profumo affair. The house and estate are in the care of the National Trust. It is within the council area of Buckinghamshire.
