Cliftonville is a northern suburb of Belfast, County Antrim. It lies within the townland of Town Parks, in the civil parish of Shankill. Cliftonville was developed as Belfast's first suburb from the 1830s onwards. Large villas in an eclectic mix of styles were built for the affluent middle class. The development was so named by architect Thomas Jackson, inspired by the Clifton area of Bristol. Though originally within a rural setting, the urban spread of Belfast had surrounded the area by the late 19th century. Cliftonville F.C., founded in 1879, is the oldest association football club in Ireland. The Cliftonville area is within the council area of Belfast.
