Clifton, Cheshire

Clifton is a village in Cheshire. It lies on the River Weaver shortly before it meets the Mersey. Though essentially surrounded by Runcorn on three sides, it remains geographically and culturally separate. It is the location of the ruins of Rocksavage Elizabethan mansion. Built in the 1560s for Sir John Savage, Rocksavage was one of the great Elizabethan houses of the county, once the second largest house in Cheshire. Clifton is within the council area of Halton.
