Cleveland, Yorkshire
Cleveland is a traditional area of Yorkshire, in the North Riding, coextensive with the wapentake of Langbaurgh and bounded by the North Sea, the River Tees, the North York Moors and the valley of the River Leven. The main towns in Cleveland are Middlesbrough, Redcar, Thornaby-on-Tees, Guisborough, Yarm and Stokesley. The Cleveland Hills were key suppliers of the ironstone that was essential to running blast furnaces along the River Tees. The area is within the council areas of North Yorkshire, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland.
