Clerkenwell, Middlesex

Clerkenwell is a metropolitan district located on the northern edge of the city of London, Middlesex. Clerkenwell took its name from the Clerks' Well in Farringdon Lane. The Priory of Clerkenwell (1185-1530) was the English headquarters of of the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem. Richard Sadler established a music hall and spa in north Clerkenwell in 1683, the current Sadler’s Wells Theatre being the sixth on the site. St James’s church was built in 1788–92 on the site of the choir of the mediæval nunnery of St Mary. The Middlesex Sessions house on Clerkenwell Green was built in 1780 as the courthouse for the Middlesex Quarter Sessions. From mediæval times Clerkenwell attracted edge-of-City trades like jewellery, lock-making, printing, bookbinding, and watch-making. During the Industrial Revolution it became a centre for breweries, distilleries and the printing industry. The area is within the council area of Islington.
