Cleish Castle, Kinross-shire
Cleish Castle is a 16th-century tower house near Cleish, Kinross-shire. The Colville family acquired the barony of Cleish in 1537 and built the castle. Following her escape from Lochleven Castle in 1568, Mary Queen of Scots is thought to have taken refuge at Cleish Castle. The five-story tower house has an L-plan layout and features crow-stepped gables and ashlar masonry. The castle grounds include a yew avenue planted around 1620, believed to be the oldest in Scotland. The castle is within the council area of Perth and Kinross.
