Clandeboye Estate, Down

The Clandeboye Estate is a historic estate in County Down. It is within the townlands of Ballyleidy, Ballyvarnet, Conlig and Lisbane, in the civil parish of Bangor. The Blackwood family had lived at Ballyleidy since at least 1681, originally as tenants of the Clanbrassil estate, John Blackwood later acquiring the freehold of the townland and other lands in the area. The current Clandeboye House was built (as Ballyleidy House) in 1801–1804 to a design by Robert Woodgate for the politician Sir James Blackwood, 2nd Baron Dufferin. The house and estate were renamed ‘Clandeboye’ by Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, in the 1840s, the Clandeboye title having come into the family from Sir James' mother, Dorcas Stevenson. The estate is within the council area of Ards and North Down.
