Clacton-on-Sea, Essex

Clacton-on-Sea is a seaside resort town in Essex. The town was developed on farmland to the south of Great Clacton by engineer and land developer Peter Bruff and his associates from the 1860s. Clacton Pier opened in 1871. The town grew quickly into a major seaside resort after the railway arrived in 1882. The town remains a major entertainment and day-trip destination. It also has a strong service sector and a large retired population. The town is within the council area of Tendring (Essex).
