Church Island Ecclesiastical Site, Londonderry

Church Island Ecclesiastical Site is the site of an Early Christian foundation and a ruined late mediæval church, situated on Church Island in Lough Beg, in the townland of Intake, County Londonderry. The church, ruinous since the 17th century, and its graveyard stand at the top of the island. The tower and spire were built for Bishop Harvey in the late 1700s to enhance the view from his house at Ballyscullion. Church Island appears to have been in use as far back as the late Mesolithic. An Early Christian foundation was sited here, reputed founded by St Patrick. There is a famous Bullaun Stone, with a hollow that fills with water, said to have been worn down by the saint as he prayed. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Mid Ulster.
