Chudleigh is an ancient market town, located in the Teign Valley in Devon. The town has Saxon origins but grew in importance during the Middle Ages as a centre of wool production. Later it thrived as a staging post for coaches on the Exeter to Plymouth coach road (now the B3344). Much of the town was destroyed by fire in 1807, giving the rebuilt town a distinct Georgian character. The church of St Martin and St Mary was consecrated in 1259. Chudleigh Town hall, in the Italianate style, dates from 1865. The town is within the council area of Teignbridge (Devon).
