Chingford Hatch, Essex

Chingford Hatch is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in the larger town of Chingford, Essex. A hatch was a gate, possibly used to prevent cattle from straying from their pasture on the edge of Epping Forest. Despite becoming contiguous with the larger town of Chingford in the mid 20th century, Chingford hatch still lies on the edge of a southerly outpost of Epping Forest. It is within the council area of Waltham Forest.
