Chingford is a suburban town in Essex, lying at the southern end of Epping Forest. Listed in Domesday as 'Cingefort', Chingford was, from ancient times, a parish in the Waltham hundred of Essex. The Church of All Saints on the summit of Chingford Mount dates from the 12th century. The parish comprised a number of disconnected hamlets until the late 19th century from when it became increasingly suburbanised. From 1895-1964, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis of Chingford urban district, a municipal borough from 1938. Chingford Town Hall (1929) is in the Baroque style. Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge (1543), on the Chingford Plain, was commissioned by Henry VIII from which to view the deer chase. The Church of St Peter and St Paul dates from 1844. The town is within the council area of Waltham Forest.
