Chichester, Sussex
Chichester is a cathedral city in Sussex. The city stands in the very west of Sussex, on Chichester Harbour, a fine, natural, sheltered harbour. It was a Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlement and a major market town from those times through Norman and mediæval times to the present day. Chichester Cathedral, founded in the 11th century, contains a shrine to Saint Richard of Chichester, whose festival day has been adopted as the county day of Sussex. The Chichester Cross is a Buttercross was built in 1501 as a covered market-place. St Mary's Hospital Almshouses are a 13th-century religious foundation providing housing and care for elderly people. The city is within the council area of Chichester (West Sussex).
