Chester-Le-Street, Durham
Chester-Le-Street is a market town in County Durham, on the River Wear. Its history goes back to Roman times when it was called Concangis. Its modern name reflects it Roman origin and its location on a Roman road, now part of the Great North Road. The Parish Church of St Mary and St Cuthbert is where the body of St Cuthbert remained for 112 years before being transferred to Durham Cathedral, and the site of the first translation of the Gospels into English. The town is within the council area of County Durham.
