Chessington, Surrey

Chessington is a suburban village in Surrey. It is listed in Domesday as 'Cisedune' and 'Cisendone'. Chessington remained a small village before major housing developments after the Second World War. St Mary's Church dates from the 12th century. Chessington Hall (demolished 1965) was home from 1754-1783 to the playwright Samuel Crisp. Chessington Zoo opened (as Surrey Zoological Gardens) in 1931 on the estate of the Burnt Stub mansion which back to 1348, though burnt down by Cromwell's forces and restored several times thereafter. Both are now part of Chessington World of Adventures theme park. The village is within the council area of Kingston upon Thames.
