Chelmsford, Essex

Chelmsford is a city and the county town of Essex. The town dates back to pre-Roman times. A Roman fort was built in AD 60 and the town given the name of Caesaromagus. In Domesday Book the town was called Celmeresfort. A charter was granted to the town in 1199 by King John. Chelmsford became an important centre for industry during the 19th century. The Shire Hall (1791) is a neo-classical, Georgian building with a Portland stone façade. Chelmsford Cathedral dates from the 15th century. Chelsmford was made a city by letters patent in 2012. The city is within the council area of Chelmsford (Essex).
