Charlton, Somerset
Charlton is a former village that now lies on the eastern edge of Shepton Mallet, Somerset. Charlton lies along the Fosse Way and is recorded in Domesday as 'Cereletone'. The Ames family held the manor from around 1630. Rober Ames rebuilt Charlton House around 1668. This was remodelled with a six-bay stone front in 1810 by later owner Provis Wickham. The Charlton Brewery was established in 1844 by Francis Berryman. The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway arrived in the 1870s, Charlton Viaduct being built in 1874 by engineer William Henry Barlow. The area is within the council area of Somerset.
