Charlton, Kent

Charlton is a suburban town in Kent. It lies between Greenwich and Woolwich and forms a south-eastern suburb of London. A parish from ancient times, it is listed in Domesday as 'Cerletone'. Charlton House (1612) is a Jacobean house of red brick with stone dressing. The present St Luke's Church dates from the 1630s, though on the site of a much older church. Charlton Athletic FC was formed in 1905 and plays at The Valley in the town. The area by the riverside (New Charlton) saw industrial development in the 19th century. The village saw large-scale housing development in the 20th century, effectively becoming a suburban town. The town is within the council area of Greenwich.
