Chard, Somerset

Chard is a town in Somerset. The town's first charter was from King John in 1234. The town was largely rebuilt after a fire in 1577. During the Monmouth Rebellion (1685), the Duke of Monmouth proclaimed himself King in Chard along the route to his eventual defeat on Sedgemoor. The Church of St Mary the Virgin dates from the late 11th century. Chard School occupies a building dating from 1583. The town is within the council area of Somerset.
