Chagford, Devon
Chagford is a small market town, situated on the north-east edge of Dartmoor in Devon. The town was established in Saxon time, lying to the south of the River Teign. A weekly market was held from before 1220. In 1305, it was designated by Edward I as a Stannary town, becoming a key location for weighing, taxing, and selling tin from Dartmoor. The wool trade was also a prominent part of the town's economy. The church of St Michael the Archangel (C of E) was dedicated in 1261. The Three Crowns Hotel was once a manor house, dating back at least as far as the 13th century. The town is within the council area of West Devon (Devon).
