Chadwell Heath is a former hamlet that is now an urban area lying to the east of Ilford in Essex. Until the late 19th century, Chadwell Heath remained a heath lying north of the Roman Road between Romford and Ilford (now the A118). The hamlet of Chadwell Street lay along the road to the west of the heath. Development began around both areas following the opening of Chadwell Heath railway station in 1864. The area saw then large-scale suburban development during the inter-war period, the two settlements becoming contiguous and the Chadwell heath name gaining precedence. St Chad's Church dates from 1895. The area is within the council areas of Barking and Dagenham and Redbridge.
