Cerne Abbey, Dorset

Cerne Abbey is a ruined Benedictine monastery at Cerne Abbas, Dorset. The abbey was founded in 987 by Æthelmær the Stout. Following the Dissolution, the buildings were mainly demolished. Abbey House (English Heritage Grade I Listed 1323849) occupies the site of the gatehouse and incorporates parts of it. The Guest House (English Heritage Grade I Listed 1119470) dates from the later 15th century, probably under abbot John Vanne (1458-70). A late 14th-century tithe barn, converted into a house in the 18th century, also survives (English Heritage Grade I listed 1119439). There is a 15th-century octagonal cross in the churchyard (English Heritage Grade I listed 1119471). The monument is within the council area of Dorset.
