Castlewellan, Down

Castlewellan is a small town in County Down. It is within the townland of Castlewellan, in the civil parish of Kilmegan. The Annesley family acquired the Manor of Castlewellan in 1741. William Annesley laid out the town in the 1750s, featuring a wide main street connecting the "Old Town" (Upper Square) and "New Town" (Lower Square) in a distinctive French design. The family also established the Grange and the walled garden from which the famous arboretum was developed in the 19th century. The family built Castlewellan Castle in the 1850s. Castlewellan became a significant centre of the linen industry in the 19th century. The Old Market House in the Upper Square dates from 1764. Castlewellan Presbyterian Church was built in 1809 and rebuilt in 1854. St Malachy's Church (RC) dates from the 1880s, on the site of an earlier chapel. St Paul's Church (C of I), opened in 1853, is in the Gothic style with a handsome porch and a graceful spire. The town is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
