Castleford, Yorkshire

Castleford is a town in Yorkshire, in the West Riding. It lies on the south bank of the River Aire, just south of where the River Calder joins the Aire. An ancient place, it was a Roman town long before it became an industrial powerhouse. The Castleford Forum Museum is a library and heritage centre. Castleford bridge, which carries Lock Lane over the Aire, was built by Jesse Hartley in 1805-08. The town is within the council area of Wakefield.
