Castle House is a large town house in Buckingham, Buckinghamshire. It is an early 15th-century house with 17th, 18th and 19th century alterations and restoration. The house was originally a residence to the Barton family in the late 14th century. The Lambard family were perhaps the most important owners of the house. While they lived there in the 17th century they oversaw major alterations to the house. The gardens at Castle House represent a rare survival of a town house garden in a 21st century town centre. It was visited by Henry VII in 1494 and later in 1513 it was the place from which Catherine of Aragon directed her forces during the battle of Flodden in 1513. The house hosted the 1644 council of war held by King Charles I and his nephew, Prince Rupert of the Palatine, at which the king made the fateful (and fatal) decision not to march on London during the Civil War. It is also thought that Thomas Jefferson and John Adams visited during their tour of English gardens and farms in 1786. It later belonged to Philip Box, banker to the Marquis of Buckingham and then to solicitor Thomas Hearn. During the 20th century it was occupied by Herbert Bull a director of the Aylesbury Brewery Company. In 1964 the house was bought by Buckingham Council and converted to offices. In 1978 it was sold and became a private residence. The house was visited by Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, In November, 2013. It is within the council area of Buckinghamshire.
