Castle Hill, Derbyshire

Castle Hill is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle near Holmesfield, Derbyshire. The motte is a 10ft high flat-topped mound measuring about 100ft across the summit. Its appearance indicates that it was the site of a shell keep. The bailey originally extended in an arc round the south side of the motte. The castle was the centre of a mediæval manor and was probably abandoned in favour of the later mediæval moated site to the north-east. It is within the council area of North East Derbyshire (Derbyshire).
Historic England Scheduled Monument 1011211.
