Castle Hill, Yorkshire

Castle Hill is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle at Laughton en le Morthen, Yorkshire, in the West Riding. It consists of a motte about 10ft high, with a kidney-shaped inner bailey to the north-east, measuring about 165ft x 65ft. Laughton was the location of the hall of Earl Edwin of Mercia, brother-in-law to King Harold Godwinson. It is thought that the site of the Saxon hall underlies the Norman earthworks. It is within the council area of Rotherham.
