Castle Hill, Cheshire

Castle Hill is a Norman motte castle near Malpas, Cheshire. The castle is located at a strategic position along a narrow promontory formed by a meander of Wych Brook, which here forms the border with Flintshire. It is believed to have been built by Fitz Hugh, Baron of Malpas. It is one of a group of early post-conquest (c.1100) mottes forming a defensive system aimed at curbing Welsh raids on the rich farming areas of south Cheshire. It is within the council area of Cheshire West and Chester.
Historic England Scheduled Monument 1012124.
