Carshalton, Surrey

Carshalton is a town in Surrey. Carshalton appears in Domesday as 'Aultone'. By the 19th century, Carshalton had become a large village with mills producing paper and parchment, leather, snuff, log-wood and seed oil. During the 19th century it became known for its lavender fields. From 1895-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis of Carshalton urban district. The village saw large-scale suburban development from the late 19th century but the historic village centre remains. The tower of All Saints Church is thought to date from before the Conquest. Carshalton Ponds lie in front of the church with Honeywood House, now a museum, to their west. The town is within the council area of Sutton.
