Carrickfergus Town Walls, Antrim

Carrickfergus Town Walls is a late 16th century - early 17th century town wall fortification in the town of Carrickfergus, County Antrim. The walls, begun around 1565, were completed under Lord Deputy Sir Arthur Chichester around 1610. The walls were 10ft thick at the base, tapering to 6ft at the top. They had seven bastions and four gates. At least half of the Carrickfergus Town Walls are still visible, often to the full height of 13ft to the wall walk. The best-preserved stretch of wall, with the north-east corner bastion, can be seen from Shaftesbury Park. The North or Spittal gate survives. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Mid and East Antrim.
