Carnmoney, Antrim

Carnmmoney is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in Newtownabbey, County Antrim. It is within the townlands of Ballyduff and Carnmoney, in the civil parish of Carnmoney. The hamlet lay around a crossroads (now Carnmoney Road and Ballyduff Road / Carnvue Road) in Ballyduff townland. There has been a Presbyterian meeting house at this crossroads since 1622, though the present building dates from 2002. A settlement which once lay around the Carnmoney parish church in Carnmoney townland had all but disappeared by the start of the 19th century. The hamlet in Ballyduff townland, which had once been known as Ballyduff, had become known as Carnmoney. It remained a hamlet until the development of Newtownabbey new town from 1958 saw large-scale development around it. Though little built remains of the hamlet have survived, the crossroads still lies at the centre of the Carnmoney area. The urban area is within the council area of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
