Carisbrooke Castle, Hampshire
Carisbrooke Castle is a Norman castle at Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight, Hampshire. There is evidence that the hill on which the castle stands was occupied during Roman and Saxon times. From 1100 the castle was in the possession of Richard de Redvers' family. Over the next two centuries his descendants improved the castle with stone walls, towers and a keep. The keep was added in the reign of Henry I. In the reign of Elizabeth I, when the Spanish Armada was expected, it was surrounded by additional fortifications by Sir George Carey. Charles I was imprisoned here for fourteen months before his execution. It is within the council area of Isle of Wight.
