Canonbury, Middlesex

Canonbury is a suburban area in the north-east of Islington, Middlesex. Canonbury is first recorded by this name 1373, being the manor granted in 1253 to the Canons of St Bartholomew's Priory, Smithfield. Canonbury House dates from this period. After numerous alterations, the remains today are the Tudor tower (Canonbury Tower) and several buildings from the 1790s. The area was developed as a suburb in the early 19th century. Canonbury Square (1805-1830) is a garden square bounded by terraces of Georgian houses. The area is within the council area of Islington.
