Canning Town, Essex

Canning Town is an urban area to the south-west of West Ham, Essex. The area was developed on the east of the River Lea and north of the Royal Victoria Dock, following the dock's opening in 1855, to provide housing for dock workers. It is thought to be named after Charles John Canning, the first Viceroy of India. Slum clearance and war time devastation led to most of the area being redeveloped post-war. The area is within the council area of Newham.
