Camden Town, Middlesex

Camden Town is a metropolitan district between St Pancras and Kentish Town in Middlesex, forming part of the north-western suburbs of London. The area to the east of the London to Hampstead road (now Camden High Street) was first developed by landowner Charles Pratt (1st Earl Camden) from 1788. Lord Southampton owned the land to the west and began to develop it in the early 19th century. Further urbanisation was spurred by the construction of the Regent's Canal (1816) and the opening of North Western Railway's terminal stop in 1837. The Roundhouse (1847) is a former locomotive roundhouse, now a music venue. Camden Market began in 1974 and attracts millions of visitors a year. The area is within the council area of Camden.
