Camberwell, Surrey
Camberwell is a former village that is now a metropolitan district in Surrey, forming a southern suburb of London. Camberwell was a substantial settlement with a church by the time of Domesday, in which it listed as 'Cambrewelle'. The present St Giles' Church (1844) replaced a Norman church which itself replaced the Saxon church. The ancient parish of Camberwell St Giles included the hamlets of Dulwich and Peckham. Camberwell saw suburban developed from the late 18th century and retains many Georgian buildings. From 1900-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis of Camberwell metropolitan district. Camberwell Town Hall (1934) was designed by Culpin and Bowers in the Classical style. The district is within the council area of Southwark.
