Calleva Atrebatum, Hampshire
Calleva Atrebatum is a late Iron Age enclosed oppida and subsequent Romano-British town, situated near Silchester, Hampshire. The site covers around 340 acres and lies in open countryside at the eastern end of a gravel spur. Calleva is thought to have originated as an oppidum, a nucleated settlement, in the Late Iron Age. The Roman settlement is thought to have begun in the mid-first century BC. The town was enclosed by a series of defensive circuits, of which the third century AD wall is the most complete and well-preserved. The site is within the council area of Basingstoke and Deane (Hampshire).
