Caledon House, Tyrone
Caledon House (aka Caledon Castle) is a late 18th-century classical mansion near the village of Caledon, County Tyrone. It was built for James Alexander, 1st Earl of Caledon, in 1779. The designer was Thomas Cooley. The house was originally of two storeys, with a seven-bay entrance front and pedimented breakfront centre. In 1812, the 2nd Earl extended the mansion to the designs of John Nash. Two single-storey domed wings (pavilions) were added. The 2nd Earl undertook further additions to the house in 1835. A third storey was built on to the main block and the pediment, resplendent with the Caledon arms, was also raised. The oval drawing-room is said to be one of the finest of its kind, with a sumptuous Regency interior and gilded friezes of Classical figures. The walled demesne is a fine landscaped park. The house is within the council area of Mid Ulster.
