Burford Priory, Oxfordshire

Burford Priory is a former Augustinian priory and later country house in Burford, Oxfordshire. The Hospital of St John the Evangelist was first recorded in 1226 and dissolved around 1540. In the 1580s an Elizabethan house was built by Sir Lawrence Tanfield, incorporating remnants of the Priory Hospital. James I stayed at the priory for three nights in 1603. In the 17th century it was remodelled in Jacobean style. It returned to ecclesiastcial use from 1949-2008, housing the Society of the Salutation of Our Lady, then returning to being a private dwelling. The house and grounds are within the council area of West Oxfordshire (Oxfordshire).
