Budleigh Salterton, Devon
Budleigh Salterton is a seaside resort town, lying at the mouth of the River Otter on the south coast of Devon. The name 'Salterton' or 'Salterne' derives from the manufacture of salt in large salt pans which were constructed at the lower part of the River Otter. These belonged to the priory of Otterton and were in use into the 18th Century. Otherwise, the settlement derived its livelihood from agriculture, fishing and smuggling. The town developed as a resort following the arrival of the railway in 1897. Fairlynch Museum is housed in a thatched marine cottage orné dating from 1811. The town is within the council area of East Devon (Devon).
