Buckfastleigh, Devon
Buckfastleigh is a small market town and historic mill town situated on the southern edge of Dartmoor in Devon. The town lies on the River Mardle, close to its confluence with the River Dart. Buckfastleigh is mediæval in origin. Historically, the town’s economy was driven by the woollen industry and tanning, powered by the local rivers. One mile north in Buckfast lies Buckfast Abbey, originally founded in 1018 and famously rebuilt by Benedictine monks between 1906 and 1938. On a hill overlooking the town sit the ruins of Holy Trinity Church. The graveyard contains the tomb of Richard Cabell (d. 1677), a local squire often linked to legends that inspired Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles. The town serves as the headquarters for the South Devon Railway. The town is within the council area of Teignbridge (Devon).
