Brownhills, Staffordshire

Brownhills is a town in Staffordshire, to the south of Cannock Chase. Brownhills lies on the Roman Road of Watling Street. A village is first recorded here (as "Brownhill") on Robert Plot's 1680 map of Staffordshire. Brownhills developed during the 19th century around coal mining, especially after it became linked to the canal and railway networks. Jigger, a coal miner statue by John McKenna ARBS, commemorates the town's mining tradition. The town is within the council area of Walsall.
